ECHO

One shouts from a mountain and hears an echo.
The reverberated sound strikes back like an arrow.
Dictating the following choice of sound.
For one’s ears fear what will resound.
No matter the choice you make, an echo will return.
Oftentimes, it is hard to discern;
Discern if it should be received or ignored.
Don’t allow the echo to be your reward.
For it is unforgiving to the soul,
And often inhibits one’s goals.
Success is not measured in echoes.
It is measured by whether or not you made it to the meadow.
Did you get to where you wanted to go?
Did your actions make you grow?
Too often we find meaning in the feedback,
And it builds up in our minds like plaque.
Building a wall between us and our achievements.
All because a few voices are in disagreement.
We are no longer kids looking for our parents’ approval.
Our decisions affect us in ways that are more crucial.
Are we going to be driven and tossed by an echo,
Or are we going to stay focused and let it go?

The reality is composed of Echoes and Shouts. Shouts are the actions we take and the echoes are the response we receive from others. Too often we decide to do things based off of what other people think. Being consumed by opinions derails the decisions we should make toward our goals. Stop listening to the echoes and do what you need to do, to accomplish the goals in front of you. Take wisdom yes, but don’t forget that not all wisdom is wise for the path you are taking. Ask God for wisdom and discern what is truly wise for your situation.

Hi, I am R.D. Jess. I am a christian writer and postpartum doula. My relationship with my God is not a religion but a state of who I am. I love being there for others and find that writing the hard truth is the best way to make people feel less alone.
