IS IT REALLY HELPING?

Wake up your alarm is screaming.
You don’t remember what you were dreaming.
You check your phone notifications,
You read the reviews of dissatisfaction.
Brew yourself a dark roast,
While listening to the news host.
Then you’re off to the races with every sound.
Working or resting, something is playing in the background.
Podcasts, TV, songs and your phone.
In every moment you’re not alone.
Every voice has a platform,
Doing their service to inform.
But where we ever meant to have so many voices?
All the opinions weighing in on our choices.
Complete access to unveiling drama,
And discovery to why we have all this trauma.
Are we truly better off knowing,
What our bodies say we were undergoing?
The knowledge seems to make them unravel.
The strong seem to be so fragile.
Like never before we see divorce,
And everyone claims to know the source.
Then why has nothing changed?
We are told to wait to be engaged,
So sex outside of marriage skyrockets.
While we are told to fill our pockets.
Young women are told to be a girl boss,
And commitment is scared away by rumors of loss.
Is it really good to have all these voices in your ear?
What you hear, sets a course for the direction you stear.
What you watch, listen and believe is who you will become.
But do we know the cost of that sum?
We are all told that we are the victim,
Under those lies we succumb to the system.
Critical race theory,
Or is it all a conspiracy.
Who’s telling you the truth, the left or right?
At this point neither seems to be right.
Everyone has an opinion about which diet is best,
And there’s a list of remedies that help you rest.
Pills that can help you pause,
Just don’t wait until menopause.
Mental health is a constant debate.
Will anyone get help at this rate?
When will we stop playing God?
When will we see these aren’t good odds?
What we have been listening too,
Has all of us screwed.
But we can’t help ourselves.
Our eyes are glued to our cells.
Consuming constant information,
Always seeking for others’ validation.
At what cost are we playing?
Because we aren’t really slaying.

Hi, I am R.D. Jess. I am a christian writer and postpartum doula. My relationship with my God is not a religion but a state of who I am. I love being there for others and find that writing the hard truth is the best way to make people feel less alone.
