THOSE LEFT BEHIND

To live in the shadows of someone you love
Is to be treated like you’re not enough.
To cheer them on in the back,
While you wonder what you lack.
Does the problem lie with me?
Sometimes it feels like I’m not there to be seen.
To be forgotten and still be humble.
While my weary heart starts to stumble.
Status and popularity are at play.
But neither of them describe me that way.
Only one I can change,
But that game is a terrible strain.
It fractures a beautiful face,
If you run to keep up the pace.
I don’t want to play this game.
I rather fade than feel this shame.
To disappear into familiar shadows.
It feels safer in the shallows.
To live your own life the way you want.
Without feeling like I have to flaunt.
I can be another hand for someone in the shadows.
To protect them from the gallows.
To tell them of a better master,
And save them from a disaster.
Our Lord commands are not a burden.
For his words we can be sure in.
His people can stumble and fall.
Making you angry at them all.
Yes, you were left behind.
No, that was not kind.
A problem must be brought to the light.
To protect others you must fight.
But that means entering the world you hate.
Is this a curse or a twisted sense of fate?

Hi, I am R.D. Jess. I am a christian writer and postpartum doula. My relationship with my God is not a religion but a state of who I am. I love being there for others and find that writing the hard truth is the best way to make people feel less alone.
